String Instruments:

There is such a large variety of string instruments with some manufacturers producing both good and poor quality instruments. Therefore, you cannot go by brand name alone.

Also, some of the imports from China are acceptable instruments but should meet the standards listed below. It would be best to deal with a reputable string shop and follow these basic guidelines: A good violin should have a new list price no less than $540.00. Violas vary in price by size and should have a new list price no less than $580.00 for the smaller sizes and $750.00 for the larger ones. Cellos should have a new list price no less than $1250.00. Fiberglass bows are acceptable for student instruments but they should have real horse hair for the bow string. Synthetic bow hair is not acceptable.
